This is Stage 1 of ‘Fan Fare’. It really came about be accident. I started looking at the basic block from a quilters point of view. That quickly morphed into a ‘What If ‘ moment.  I have posted a brief overview of how to draw the basic block (see image on left). ‘Fan Fare’, as shown,  is the completed Stage 1 of this piece. The basic block is comparatively easy to draw, though, to be sure, it is a bit tedious. You can only mark each progressive point to draw to, essentially, as you go.

Go ahead and give it a try – you will see what I mean 🙂

You will also notice that you have to keep your thinking cap on. Add each additional line in a clockwise direction. It is quite easy to get distracted and think ‘now, where was I ‘ – or is that just me:)

The 3 Stages of ‘Fan Fare’

‘Fan Fare’ is a 3 x 4 grid of the same block repeated side by side. I found the interplay of pattern where the blocks meet quit fascinating. Again, it is creating curves by drawing straight lines. They are not parabolic curves, but they are curves just the same.

I think of each of the long triangles within each block as a ‘blade’ of the design. In Stage 2, I will change the shape of the end of each blade. There are several different options I have in mind. Stay tuned for the next post to see what option I choose.

I will also post a few other options as well so you have a few options to choose from if you try you own hand at this piece.

In Stage 3, I will add colour and/or pattern.

Go ahead and give it a try. You only need paper, pen/marker and a ruler and you’re off and running. If you make a mistake, don’t beat yourself up about it:) Simply accept it for what it is, move onward and enjoy the process:)
