Fan Fare - Sample Block

‘Fan Fare’ Sample Colour Block

Well, I have started to add colour to ‘Fan Fare’ and quickly realised that it will take significantly longer than I anticipated 🙂

In view of that, I thought the ‘Fan Fare’ Sample Colour Block would give you an overview of what I am doing in the ‘colouring’ stage of Fan Fare.

In each of the blocks, I have decided to colour each of the blades in each segment in alternating colours. I will be using the same colurways in opposing segments. In total, I will be using, essentially 4 colours.

Initially, I will be adding a light layer of coloured pencil using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. By adding just a light layer, you will notice that some of the white paper will invariably show through. From there, I will then be adding a layer of a corresponding colour using a Tombow marker. In the image shown, you will notice that half the image shows the blades with the colour pencil only added. The other half of the image show both layers, the colour pencil with the Tombow marker over the top. If you look closely at this section, you will be able to see the subtle underlying texture of the pencil underneath the marker layer.

The following table shows the colour of Polychromos pencils used in the sample image and my piece ‘Fan Fare’.

To Add Pattern or Not To Add Pattern

You will also notice some simple pattern added to some of the ‘blades’ in the pencil and marker half of the image. I haven’t decided if I will any pattern to the blades yet. That decision will be made once I have finished adding the colour. As you would appreciate, you would only only fairly simply patterns to the blades. The space available to create a pattern is fairly limited. It needs to be something small enough to be able to be repeated enough times to ‘register’ as a pattern.

Off course, the patterns shown are just a suggestion. If you are creating your own version of ‘Fan Fare’, please feel free to add any pattern of your own choice 🙂
